What to do in a car accident

If you are unfortunate enough to have an accident, we’re here to help. Always put the safety of you and your passengers first:

Call smart road assistance on ☏ 00800 2 777 7777 to get you, your passengers and your vehicle to a safe place.

  • Stop your vehicle as soon as possible in a safe place, such as a layby or hard shoulder. It is illegal to drive away from the scene of an accident.
  •  Switch off the engine and put your hazard lights on.
  •  Ensure all passengers are removed from the vehicle and well away from the road.
  • If passengers are injured, do not attempt to move them. Call the emergency services immediately by dialling 999.
  • If another vehicle is involved, exchange details, take photos and contact your insurance company.

In the event of an accident, smart road assistance will either repair or tow your car to the nearest smart Retailer. We will provide replacement travel, be it a flight, train or a replacement car, and cover accommodation for the driver and passengers whilst repairs are carried out. Terms and conditions apply

What to do if your car breaks down

As with road accidents, always get to a safe place first. If possible, move your vehicle off the road or onto the hard shoulder, staying well away from oncoming traffic.

  • Put your hazard lights on, and if visibility is poor, keep the sidelights on too.
  • Wait a safe distance from the road or behind a barrier.
  • If you have a reflective jacket, put it on.
  •  If you have a warning triangle, you can place it at least 45m behind your vehicle. Do not attempt this on a motorway or dual carriageway, as it can be dangerous.
  •  Do not attempt any repairs if you are on the motorway. Call smart road assistance on  ☏ 00800 2 777 7777 so we can get your car up and running again.

Smart road assistance will come to you, wherever you breakdown. We will either fix your smart on the spot, or get it towed to the nearest smart retailer to get it repaired as quickly as possible. If you breakdown far from home, we can arrange for your car to be taken to your local smart retailer. If you breakdown locally, we can return your smart home once repairs have been completed.

 


Car vandalism

Car vandalism is a criminal offence and comes in the form of smashed car windows, slashed tyres, keyed bodywork and broken wing mirrors. When you take pride in your smart, it can be deeply distressing to find that someone has intentionally damaged your car. If your car has been vandalised, here’s what to do:

  • Call the police on a non-emergency line by dialling 101. When you give details of the incident, it will be filed and you’ll receive a crime reference number.
  • Take photos of the inside and outside of the car from all angles and leave the “crime scene” exactly how it is – this will all act as supporting evidence.
  • Call smart road assistance and report the incident. Make sure you have all information to hand, including your crime reference number and details of the vandalism.

Running out of petrol, getting punctures and losing car keys

Also known as “minor mishaps”, these are the small things happen to the best of us but can be an absolute nightmare to get sorted without the right support. We want your smart experience to be as seamless as possible. That’s why our road assistance covers even the most minor of instances:

  • If you run out of petrol, follow the same instructions as a breakdown. Get to a safe place, turn your hazards on and call us immediately so we can top you up.
  •  If you get a tyre puncture, pull into a layby or hard shoulder and use your hazards. Call us and we will get your wheels repaired as soon as possible.
  •  If you lose your car keys, give us a call so we can arrange for a replacement set and get you back on the road.

All smarts registered* on or after 01/11/2014, will benefit from smart road assistance for three years. After this, your it will be automatically renewed for a year every time your smart goes in for an official smart service for up to 30 years.

    If you breakdown far from home, we will arrange to take your car back to your local smart Retailer if the repair cannot be completed within 3 working days.

  • Recovery

    If required, we will organise and cover the cost of towing your car to the local smart Retailer, or an alternative smart Retailer of your choice (within a radius of 30 miles) of the breakdown location).

  • Vehicle drop-off

    If you breakdown locally, once the repair is complete, we will arrange and cover the cost of the return of your car, to your home, within a 30 mile radius of the smart Retailer.

    To help you on your journey, we’ll cover the cost of a taxi or public transport. If your journey requires train or plane travel, we’ll cover the cost for return flight or train travel for the driver and passengers as an alternative to a replacement car.
