The way to France is arduous: south of Phoenix our newest electric models did their last laps in the torrid Arizona desert heat before their premiere at the Paris Motor Show. But it was a long and hard road to get here. Before the tests performed by our engineers, for example extensive battery cooling tests in heat of up to 50°C, the fourth generation smart electric drive had already been put through its paces in Northern Sweden in addition to endurance testing in its home city of Stuttgart.

Because constant improvement is the only way to stay ahead: Despite experience from three generations of electric mobility the new smart electric drive is raising the bar to a new level once again. The new battery must stay just as cool in one of the world's hottest and driest locations as it does in Arctic regions. But the tests performed not only help the smart electric drive to hold its own in the city jungle – they are also pioneering for further innovations within the Group. This is because the values measured in Arizona serve as extreme benchmarks for future prototypes: Daimler uses them for the digital simulators and climatic chambers worldwide – smart is and remains a true pioneer.
