In the world's most open test drive, drivers of the new smart fortwo cabrio need to be as open as the car they are driving. During the drive, the participants are required to answer a series of awkward questions while connected to a lie detector. And they need to tell the truth,
as only honest answers will keep the cabrio's top open. A particularly delicate aspect is the fact that the questions are asked by the driver's mother, best friend or partner, for example. Who can remain open throughout the entire test drive? Find out here!
Fuel consumption (combined) 4.3 - 4.2 l/100 km,
CO2 emissions (combined) 99 - 97 g/km.These figures do not refer to an individual vehicle but serve solely as a comparison between different vehicle types.
Smart get-up: the smart fortwo cabrio is unmistakably a smart, but with its own distinctive character. The iconic two-tone design is augmented by the tritop fabric soft top in black. A perfect overall design destined to divide opinions on which looks better: "open" or "closed".
The perfect choice to round off your smart: alloy wheel or steel wheel, black of silver, spokes or twin-spokes – the choice of rim designs covers all tastes.
Shining highlights: on request, the front lights in a clear glass look with halogen lamps welcome you with the optional welcome function and elegantly curved, integrated daytime driving lights featuring LED fibre-optic technology.
Flexible roof has all options covered: the tritop fabric soft top in black can be opened to any desired position and closed again in a matter of seconds. Even while you are on the move. In this way, you can let the sunshine in while reliably keeping the cold and wet out.
A fresh breeze even with the soft top closed: the large air vents on the dashboard ensure a pleasant temperature and fresh air at all times – and display the smart logo when closed.
The most alluring source of light after the sun: the ambient lighting brings out the best in the stylish interior at night-time. Fibre-optic cables in the door centre panel, centre console and footwell produce an indirect, soft light. Atmospheric detail: the light tracing the round contours of the centre console drawer.
Sporty handling: the 3-spoke multifunction sports steering wheel with perforated leather and grey topstitching lends the interior an even more dynamic look. And it not only looks good: frequently used functions are safe and convenient to use thanks to integrated buttons.
Virtual to reality: sun, palm trees, Miami: enjoy the summer in the new smart fortwo cabrio – and discover the city in a whole new light. Experience the unique smart fortwo cabrio feeling and the record-breaking small turning circle from the passenger perspective as you will have more time to be amazed. Open to new ideas: the new smart fortwo cabrio. Experience it now.
The smallest turning circle under the sun: when it comes to turning, the smart fortwo remains without parallel in its cabrio version, too. Thanks to its length of just 2.69 m and the new Direct-Steer system with variable ratio, the turning circle of just 6.95 m measured from wheel to wheel takes some beating.
In such a short cabrio the city belongs to you: with an overall length of just 2.69 m, a raised seat position and good all-round visibility, parking is child's play. The short overhangs and the wide track provide for excellent roadholding and make a bold visual statement.
Noticeably lighter: the Direct-Steer system makes parking and manoeuvring even easier. It combines the comfort of speed-sensitive power steering with variable transformation ratios, depending on the steering wheel angle. This provides for more agile cornering and even better directional stability.
Driving thrills galore: a rear engine and rear-wheel drive is normally the reserve of sports cars. This combination adds up to plenty of driving fun in the smart fortwo cabrio as well. Engines rated at 52 kW or 66 kW and the twinamic dual clutch transmission span a broad performance spectrum, from a quick spin to relaxed cruising.
Enough space for sunny days and everyday driving: with the smart fortwo cabrio it's not only the panorama that's larger than life. The interior is also generously dimensioned and offers plenty of air. Whatever you need every day – with a luggage compartment capacity of 340 l you can simply take it along with you!
This cabrio has all the details covered: the practical stowage compartment in the tailgate accommodates the roof bars when the soft top is fully open.
Everything neatly in place as you let your hair fly in the wind: with ingenious storage facilities and stowage solutions, the smart fortwo cabrio offers plenty of space for those small everyday items. With the optional drawer in the centre console, integrated cup holders and practical stowage compartments in the doors, for example.
Now you see them, now you don't: the roof bars in the tridion colour can be removed in next to no time. When the soft top is fully open they are simply stowed away in the tailgate.
Clear vision: the soft top incorporates a heated rear window made of glass. For good visibility at all times, even when the roof is closed and the temperature outside drops below zero.
Perfect sound, perfectly connected: the smart Audio-System plays your favourite music not only from the radio, but also via Bluetooth®, AUX and USB. And together with the optional universal smartphone cradle and the smart cross connect app it becomes your multimedia control centre.
The functions at a glance: The audio system also includes a USB connection and AUX socket for external audio devices such as a USB stick or an MP3 player. Fully in keeping with the latest trends, audio streaming allows music tracks stored on a smartphone to be played back via a Bluetooth®connection. The cradle is mechanically adjustable for a perfect fit: compatible with smartphones with screen sizes from 3.5 to 5 inches. What's more, you can charge your smartphone via the integrated USB port.

The free smart cross connect app is available for iOS and Android operating systems – and offers all kinds of infotainment. Turns the cabrio into an open-air stage: the JBL sound system supplements the Media-System or Audio-System with an impressive sound experience: 6 high-performance loudspeakers including a removable woofer in the luggage compartment and an amplifier with a total of 200 watts deliver first-class sound in the smart fortwo cabrio.
All set for the best reception: the digital radio uses the digital or analogue signal according to availability to ensure the best possible reception quality. It also offers valuable additional information on the traffic situation and radio programmes.
As transmission in digital broadcasting mode is not yet available everywhere, the digital radio automatically switches from digital to analogue reception and vice versa according to signal strength. You can also switch between digital and analogue mode manually.

The heart of the innovative smart safety concept: the tridion safety cell is made of high-tech steels and encases the passengers like the hard shell of a nut. Deformation is kept to a minimum in the event of an impact. On a visual level, it is instrumental to the iconic design.
Takes the punch out of gusts of wind: Crosswind Assist is able to compensate even strong gusts of wind. When the esp® sensors sense the vehicle is at risk of leaving the lane they automatically initiate controlled brake intervention. The vehicle stays on course and the steering effort is greatly reduced.
Anticipating dangers: the radar-based forward collision warning function can help to prevent rear-end collisions. If an insufficient safety distance is detected a warning lamp lights up in the instrument cluster. If the distance becomes critical with a risk of collision there is also an acoustic warning.
Keeping you on track: Lane Keeping Assist is an attentive passenger that helps prevent you from leaving your lane unintentionally. A video camera scans road markings and detects differences in contrast between the road surface and boundary lines. Acoustic and visual warnings are given.
Five airbags as standard: the smart fortwo cabrio comes with one airbag for driver and front passenger respectively and a kneebag for the driver. There is also a head/thorax bag for the driver and front passenger in their respective seat backrests.
The most rigid cabrio body to date: torsional stiffness is a particularly crucial safety factor for a cabrio. On the smart fortwo cabrio it has been improved by around 15% in comparison to its predecessor by means of a special blend of different types of steel.
Safe motoring with the soft top down, too: the roll-over bar of the smart fortwo cabrio lends the body added stability.
Comparison of lines.
