Active, passive, innovative.
Because it’s best to prevent dangerous situations from arising at all, the smart fortwo has a whole host of innovative assistance systems to avoid accidents.

And should the worst come to the worst, the innovative tridion safety cell and five airbags as standard offer maximum protection.
The tridion safety cell is made of high-tech steels and encases the passengers like the hard shell of a nut. Deformation is kept to a minimum in the event of an impact. In conjunction with the bodypanels the unmistakable iconic look is created.
Crosswind Assist is even able to compensate strong gusts of wind. When the esp® sensors sense the vehicle is at risk of leaving the lane they automatically initiate controlled brake intervention. The vehicle stays on course and the steering effort is greatly reduced.
The radar-based proximity warning function can help to prevent rear-end collisions. If an insufficient safety distance is detected a warning lamp lights up in the instrument cluster. If the distance becomes critical with a risk of collision there is also an acoustic warning.
Lane Keeping Assist is an attentive passenger that helps prevent you from leaving your lane unintentionally. A video camera scans road markings and detects differences in contrast between the road surface and boundary lines. An acoustic and a visual warning is given.
Hill start assist prevents the vehicle from rolling backwards when moving off on a hill. The system is part of esp® and maintains the brake pressure when the driver moves their foot from the brake pedal to the accelerator pedal.
When the airbags are triggered in an accident the crash sensor automatically activates the hazard warning lights. This enables vehicles behind to be warned in good time and subsequent collisions to be avoided.
The anti-lock braking system prevents the wheels from blocking during emergency braking. The vehicle remains steerable and an obstacle can be avoided. Electronic brake-force distribution ensures the optimum distribution of braking forces between the front axle and the rear axle.
Cruise control enables you to set a cruising speed of your choice. In addition, a maximum speed can be set with the limiter. This offers additional comfort and safety when there are speed limits, for example in 30 km/h zones.
esp® can prevent accidents caused by swerving. The system compares the vehicle’s behaviour with the driver’s intention, for example based on the position of the steering wheel. Split-second brake intervention on individual wheels and torque adjustment stabilise the vehicle.
The rear parking aid facilitates manoeuvring and helps to avoid annoying damage. Three sensors in the rear bumper measure the distance to obstacles detected. The smaller the remaining distance, the shorter the intervals of the warning tone, culminating in a continuous tone.
The reversing camera makes reversing into a parking space easier and safer. It is switched on when reverse gear is engaged and shows the area behind the vehicle on the multi-touch display of the smart Media-System. Dynamic guide lines show the steering angle.
If the value falls below a level relevant to safety, a warning lamp in the instrument cluster lights up. This automatically reduces the risk of breakdowns and accidents.
The airbags for driver and passenger inflate like a protective layer and can prevent serious chest or head injuries. The air cushion inflates within milliseconds to protect the upper body and distribute the force applied to as large an area as possible.
In addition to airbags for driver and passengerManual airbag deactivation on the passenger's side., the smart fortwo comes with a kneebag for the driver and two head/thorax bags in the driver and passenger seat backrests as standard.
