Although the smart fortwo is the smallest city car it has a surprisingly spacious interior. To prove this we invited unsuspecting passers-by to do a blind test.
Guess the car.
Guess the carThe smart fortwo – a small city car with a surprisingly spacious interior. We invited unsuspecting passers-by to do a blind test.
The task: in total darkness, guess which car you are sitting in. And the results speak for themselves.
The innovative smart space concept.
If you’ve ever been in a smart fortwo, you’ll know that the feeling of comfort begins as soon as you get in through the large doors.
And once you've sat down you’ll be surprised by the comfortable, spacious interior and at the same time the excellent all-round visibility.
Whether because of its large cab-forward windscreen or the upright seating position, you can enjoy the generous feeling of spaciousness in the interior of the smart fortwo. This means that even taller smart enthusiasts will enjoy the same level of comfort.
Keeping "on top of things".
One of the many advantages of the vehicle design is that the raised seating position in the smart fortwo gives you excellent all-round vision, even in the heaviest traffic. And you will have to get used to being looked up to by drivers of large saloon cars.
Seating arrangements that make sense.
The passenger seat is positioned further back ensuring additional arm and legroom and better side visibility for the driver at junctions.
The smart fortwo has an innovative safety concept. At the heart of it is the tridion safety cell: it offers maximum stability with a compact construction and therefore protects the interior.
In conjunction with further passive safety elements such as crash boxes and deformation elements, the tridion safety cell offers maximum protection in a small space. And should you ever get into a tricky situation, ESP® with ABS features as standard.
Full-size airbags and head/thorax side airbags.
Two full-size front airbags offer maximum protection for driver and passenger in the event of a frontal impact. In the event of a side-on impact, the robust steel door structure and optional head/thorax side airbags afford additional protection for the head and chest.
The wheel as a deformation element.
In a head-on collision, the front wheel is supported by the side member, thus absorbing a substantial proportion of the impact energy. The short wheelbase means that the other vehicle involved in a side-on crash will almost always hit the wheel and the suspension components behind. A simple, yet extremely effective principle.
Safety seats with integral seat belts and belt tensioners.
The sheet steel structure with integral headrests lends the seats a high level of mechanical stability. In a frontal impact the belt tensioner will reduce any slack in just a few milliseconds. The belt-force limiter then reduces the force again in a controlled manner in order to minimise pressure on the chest area.
ESP® with ABS.
When the vehicle is in danger of skidding, the electronic stability programme (ESP®) throttles the engine torque and brakes specific individual wheels to prevent understeer or oversteer. ESP® in conjunction with the anti-lock braking system (ABS) prevents the vehicle from breaking away, for example during fast cornering or emergency braking.
